FL: Vero Beach Anchorage

Tuesday 3/13/2018
Depart: Fort Pierce City Marina 10:15
Arrive: Vero Beach Anchorage 12:15
Distance: 14 nm

Clark plans for us to be in Titusville in two-days time to visit the Kennedy Space Center. Since we talked to Jim and Joann on Namaste Too and discovered they also planned to visit there, we delayed our planned visit by one day to coincide with their plans. Given that, we had an extra day to make the trip to Titusville a more leisurely one. We decided to stay in nearby Vero Beach to break up the travel time.

Before we could get underway, however, we needed to visit the local recycle shop to turn in our batteries and get some cash back in exchange.

We collected our $66+ and headed to Enterprise via a stop at a nearby gas station. We found the slowest pumps in the state of Florida! Eventually Clark got sufficient gas in the tank to head out. Fortunately the driver at Enterprise was available immediately, so we got a quick ride back to the boat and could get underway soon after returning the car.

On the way to Vero Beach, Clark contacted Don who lives there to say we would be nearby. He invited us to come for docktails at his house at 5:00. After making our way to our anchorage for the night, we discovered we had other boating friends in the area as well. I saw a post on Facebook from Linda on Ramble On that she and Scott were on a mooring ball at the Vero Beach Municipal Marina. When I mentioned it to Clark, he said he had heard them call the marina on the VHF radio for a mooring ball pickup.

I messaged Linda to let her know we were in the area. Shortly afterwards we got a surprise visit from Scott in his dinghy. They were moored right around a bend in the river. When Scott arrived, Clark was in the process of launching our dinghy, so Scott kindly offered to help him. After they got the dinghy launched, Scott left and Clark went to visit another boat in the anchorage.

We could see a boat anchored behind us with a looper flag, and Clark was curious to see who it might be. He took boat cards with him to introduce himself. Surprise Surprise Surprise! It turned out to be Sum Escape who we have known for some time now and keep running into in unexpected places.

I decided not to join Clark on his visit to see Don since I wanted to focus on tackling some too-long ignored chores on the boat. While Clark was gone, Scott came back to visit and brought Linda with him. We sat and chatted on our cockpit.

Even though we spent the night in an anchorage, we had good WiFi with our WiFi booster, so I was able to get some blogging done. Trying as hard as I can, I have not been able to get caught up to date, so I did not want to miss this golden opportunity.

Since Clark had not appeared and the sun had begun to get pretty low in the sky, I called him and told him to "come home". I did not relish stowing the dinghy in the dark as it is not a simple process, and we still have not gotten it down to a routine yet. He appeared about the same time the mosquitoes decided it was dinner time. I was not pleased to fight them as we secured the dinghy back on top of Sunset Delight.
