Travel to Brunswick, Georgia

3/18/2017

We took a shockingly long time to leave our anchorage this morning. First, we stayed in bed until 9:45. I woke much earlier than that, but Clark showed no signs of waking, and the bed was so cozy warm compared to the unheated, cold room that I just snuggled in for a bit longer. My mom taught me to pull my clothes into bed with me in the morning for a few minutes before getting up to take the chill out. Well, my clothes warmed up quite nicely due to the length of my "just a bit longer" stay in bed.

When we finally dragged ourselves out of bed, I looked out the window and was surprised to see boats still in the anchorage. I thought they would have all left hours earlier. We also saw the boat from the mainland bringing numerous visitors to explore the island.

Even running late, Clark decided he needed to work on the 12-volt outlet on the upper helm with which he has been fighting. He plugs in his iPad as a navigation device, and as he goes along, the charge on the iPad continuously drops, i.e. it is not charging. Today he decided to clean the contacts and found more than he bargained for. First he attacked the problem with emery cloth and contact cleaner spray. Then he went at it with a metal probe. What he found surprised him greatly.

With the level of corrosion he found, he has now added "replace 12-volt outlets" to the boat repair list.

We finally left the anchorage about 11:15. We only had something like 32 nautical miles to travel today instead of the 50 or 60 we have been doing. With warmer weather and much less wind, we expected smooth sailing.

One last look at Cumberland Island as we continue our travels north.

This part of Georgia has an interesting mix of industry, US Navy, and rural scenery. Shortly after leaving the anchorage, we passed a Degaussing station. Clark understood its purpose, but I had to do some research to get a better understanding of its use by the Navy.

Located at the same facility, we saw a couple of ships and a security boat standing watch over the area. Although the guard boat sat in the distance, Clark said he figured they had machine guns at the ready.

After the excitement of the naval station, the scenery became rather bland.

As we approached our destination for the day, however, the area became more industrial in appearance.

Then, as we came closer to our destination, the area supplied us with a very nice mix of ships to admire.

In the middle of all these interesting ships, we passed the fuel dock where Clark wants to add fuel to our boat. We came here last year too to take advantage of their fuel prices. I remember thinking at the time that it did not resemble the fuel docks we normally use. Since it was closed for the weekend, we will fuel up here when we leave port.

Since we came into the Golden Isles area on a Saturday, I looked to see what events are taking place over the weekend. I found a "Caffeine and Octane at the Beach" muscle and classic car show on Jekyll Island that sounded interesting until we saw an entrance fee.

The next item I found right here where we are staying said "free" and caught my attention. The barquentine tall ship, Peacemaker, is in its home port of Brunswick, Georgia. Free, self-guided tours are available on Sundays through the end of May.

A little after 3:00 we arrived at the Brunswick Landing Marina where we will stay for a couple of nights as we need to pre-position our car again.

After docking and checking in (which took an inordinately long time), we went to find our car that we had pre-positioned at this marina and drove to the stores to do some shopping. Clark needed an attachment for the grease gun he bought a few stops back. Without it, he cannot access the place he needs to apply grease. I needed some food supplies. Of course that meant we had multiple stops to make especially since the part he needed was hard to find.

We tried Harbor Freight first for the grease gun attachment but without success. Happily, we found something Clark thinks will work at Auto Zone. While he shopped in Auto Zone, I went to Walgreen's. Then because Walgreen's did not have what I needed, we went to Rite Aid and then finally CVS.  By the time we finally got to the food store, it was already well after 6:00. I still had to buy the food, bring it back to the boat, and cook it before we could eat dinner.

I found what we needed and as we walked up to the front to check out, Clark noticed a Coke display he thought picture-worthy.

Someone spent a lot of time on this one!

We got back to the boat just before 8:00. I quickly threw together a beef and vegetable stir fry, and we sat down to eat at 8:30. After dinner, I worked on blog updates while Clark did his usual personal business and boat-related activities.
