TI: Brockville to Kingston Canada

Monday 7/30/2018
Depart: Brockville, Canada 9:15
Arrive: Kingston, Canada Portsmouth Olympic Marina 3:15
Distance: 28 nm

Sadly we picked the worst week to go to Canada as everyone there has holiday for the week. When ready to depart Brockville, Clark called Gananoque to acquire a reservation for the night and found that no space was available and they had a 9-boat waiting list for a slip. He poured over charts and guidebooks looking for an alternative place including anchorages and came up pretty empty on options.

Finally he decided we should go to Kingston. He called the Confederation Basin marina there. They said they "do not take reservations within 48 hours". Clark asked how it looked as far as getting a spot there, and with three spots available they felt our chances were pretty good to get one. With that in mind, we set out for Kingston.

Upon arrival in Kingston, we contacted the marina. After a pause where they checked availability, they came back and said the marina could not accommodate us for the night. Clark considered anchoring at Duck Island on Lake Ontario, but he had heard that the anchor holding may be a concern. He decided to try the Portsmouth Olympic marina, also in Kingston, first. Fortunately they could take us for the night.

Having been to Kingston twice before, we opted for a relaxing night aboard and did not venture into town.

We passed a statue of the "Patron Saint of the St. Lawrence River" today. St. Lawrence offended a high official by giving money to the poor. The official demanded that St. Lawrence be "roasted alive". Supposedly he said, while being roasted, "You better turn me over. I am done on this side."

We could not stay there, but we did get a glimpse of Gananoque as we passed by.
