Marathon, Florida - Doggy Olympics at Faro Blanco

Saturday 1/13/2018
Faro Blanco in Marathon, Florida
No boat travel.
4 miles by bike

We had only one agenda item for today - go to Publix to restock on some key food items. However, when I peaked outside I found big activity going on at the marina. Publix became second priority instantly.

The SPCA set up displays, tables, and a "doggy olympics" program for the morning. The Olympics had three events: retrieve tennis balls, refuse treats until allowed to eat, and lick owner's face. The dogs mostly did not behave as expected.

The dogs sniffed then ignored the tennis balls.

Dogs refused them even when handed one!

No kisses for this owner even though he had a treat to bribe the pup.

I think she was kissing the dog - not the other  way around.

Each winner came away with a "dog bone" blue ribbon.

By the time the Olympics completed, it was time for lunch. Hot dogs and hamburgers were available for purchase at the event for the bargain price of $15. I know some of the proceeds went to the SPCA, but I still decided to cook my own hot dogs for free.

We set off after eating lunch on the 2-mile bike ride to the grocery store. On the way we saw some debris from Hurricane Irma and some closed businesses. We also saw some businesses boasting their ability to be open in spite of Irma and repairs completed as well as underway including a large segment of new sidewalk laid between the marina and the grocery store. Sadly, while shopping in Publix, we learned that Winn Dixie is closed due to the storm and may remain that way permanently. What a shame!

After biking back to the boat with our goods, I felt like checking out the pool. I walked over and found Jim from Hour Plan enjoying the heated pool. We chatted for a while and then I walked back to the boat and got into my swimsuit to take a dip. I convinced Clark to come too and we both enjoyed some pool time.

What a difference a few hours make. By 5:00 winds coming in from the north had picked up and we got a serious chill in the air. Where earlier I had been comfortable in the pool, now I was cold in a hooded sweatshirt.

At 5:30 we walked over to docktails and chatted with folks. One person had gone out on a fishing boat this morning and brought back his full quota of snapper. He was busy cooking on the grill to make fish tacos to share for docktails.

I had other dinner plans, so I left at 6:00 when they said food was ready to eat. I desperately wanted to get someplace warm and away from the wind. Clark followed shortly thereafter bringing a sunset picture back with him.

We spent the evening listening to the winds howl and feeling the boat sway with the gusts!
