After leaving Chesapeake City, Maryland, we traveled another 14 miles down the C&D Canal to arrive in Delaware City, Delaware for the night.

We got our first view of New Jersey as we traveled the C&D Canal. New Jersey is the pale-colored strip of land that appears under the center span of the bridge in the next picture.

We're almost home!! |
After exiting the C&D Canal, we entered the Delaware River. After traveling upstream about a mile, we turned off the Delaware to enter the canal branch where Delaware City is located. When the canal was opened, Delaware City had visions of becoming as large a city as Philadelphia. That clearly did not happen.

The main attractions in Delaware City were closed today and tomorrow - those being Pea Patch Island and Fort Delaware State Park. We decided to grab our bikes and go look around town before the weather associated with the storm warnings we had been receiving arrived in town.

As we biked around town, Clark kept a careful watch on the weather. He could tell it was coming, so we headed back to the boat.

Two Hours Later - Storm Gone, Sun Shining |
While it rained, I worked on the blog, and Clark did trip planning and then took a nap. After his nap, we decided to walk up to the restrooms together. When we stepped off the boat to run up to the restrooms, we found Frank and Alexis from
Carribean Queen just walking up to our boat to chat. They are on the Great Loop and got a very late start from Mobile, Alabama. We were definitely surprised to find any other "loopers" at this late date on this part of the loop and heading north to the Erie Canal.
We had not eaten dinner yet, and it was already after 7:00, but after we returned to the boat from our visit to the washrooms, Clark decided that he wanted to go for a bike ride to see the park that we missed on our earlier tour. I guess he woke energized from that nap. I opted to stay at the boat and work on the blog. As it turned out, I ended up talking with Alexis for almost the whole time Clark was gone, so neither the blog nor making dinner happened while he was gone.
I did not realize it until Clark pointed it out to me that Delaware City and the Delaware City Marina are on the "old" canal. He told me this after he came back from his bike ride with 50 more pictures on the camera and a dozen or so more on his phone camera. More good "stuff" for the blog!

A cemetery containing the remains of five black Union soldiers from the Civil War black units was discovered by children in 1990. This area has been in progress of restoration since that time. The old cemetery is along the canal.
