2020: Local boating in Marathon FL

March 1 to 5 2020

Often we spend our days doing the mundane chores of every day living - taxes, vacuuming, cleaning, etc. On occasion we find work that is unique to living on a boat. For example, I spent the better part of Tuesday this week using a boat hook to push sea grass out of our boat slip. When the north wind blows, massive amounts of sea grass come in and pack in tight around our boat.

With a southerly wind, the grass starts to break up and move back out where it belongs. When it is packed in tight like this week, the wind alone cannot remove the piled up grass. If it sits for too long in the heat, it starts to rot producing fumes and stirring up my allergies.

When I woke in the morning to the sound of Mel's boat running its engines, I knew that he was using the propellers to get the sea grass moving away from his boat. That motivated me to pull out a boat hook and push our grass out towards the bay. I worked at it for an hour. Clark serenaded me on the guitar while I "raked the grass".

When Sandy said she was going to the store, I abandoned my work and went with her for a break. Clark came along to hit the post office along the way to Publix. Upon returning to the boat, I decided to keep working at the sea grass and managed to get a vast majority of it to disappear.

On Wednesday, Clark suggested we take "Sunset Delight" out for its weekly maintenance run. We left around 11:30 to anchor at Pigeon Key for a "picnic" lunch on the cockpit of our boat. As we pulled out of the slip, we left a trail of sea grass following behind us. Apparently, a bunch of it was trapped under the boat and freed itself as we left the slip.

It took less than 30 minutes for us to reach Pigeon Key, and by noon, we were sitting out with sandwiches in hand admiring the view.

As I stood at the bow of the boat watching the anchor settle into place, I noticed that the boat had grown a bow beard while sitting at the dock.

As we ate lunch, Clark contemplated going in for a swim to scrape off the bow beard. From experience, we knew that it was not coming off without serious help.  We had some time before we had to be back at Faro Blanco, so he decided to go for it. With a water temp of 75 degrees, he decided he did not need a wet suit.

He worked his way up the port side, cleaning as he went.

There it goes - no more beard!

Clark had difficulty holding himself near the boat while he scraped. He kept floating away. He could just manage to stay near on the port side, but when he switched over to the starboard side he needed some assistance to fight the current. I suggested that I drop a line down for him to hold on to. He took me up on that offer. The camera went away and a line came out. I held it short and tight, so he could hold  himself in close enough to the boat to scrape the hull and not keep drifting away.

As soon as he was done scraping, we pulled up anchor and headed back to the marina. We had a very important date. Dave and Beverly, "Amelie", have a car and invited us to join them at 3:00 to go for ice cream at Sweet Savannah's.

Dave, Beverly, and Ev at Sweet Savannah's! Yummy!

When Dave and Beverly invited us out for ice cream on Wednesday, they also invited us to join them on Thursday for a dinghy ride and lunch at a local restaurant. We decided on a trip to Lazy Days restaurant. We left around 10:45 and decided to go for lunch first and then dinghy exploring afterwards to avoid finding the restaurant super busy. My salad contained enough food to serve as my lunch as well as my dinner. I took more than half of the salad "home" with me.

Since it seemed a little less "bumpy" on the bay side, we went back under the 7-mile bridge to explore the marinas to the east of Faro Blanco. We explored the boat basins at Marlin Bay, Blackfin, Banana Bay, and Tranquility Bay. We saw some boats we recognized. However, due to the high heat / humidity, we saw no one we knew. All the boats were closed up with air conditioning running.

The weather proved perfect for our dinghy outing and not-so-perfect to be back at the docks. We stayed out on the dinghies, including lunch, for a full three hours. Eventually, however, we had to return to the marina. With high humidity and temperatures in the upper 80s, we found it oppressive to be back on "Sunset Delight". Clark turned on the air conditioning, and we left in our suits for a dip in the pool. We found a few of our boater friends there as well.

After a very long soak in the cool, pool water, we returned to the now air-conditioned, comfortable  boat. On Thursday's we have "heavy hors d'oeuvres" at docktails, so around 5:00 we headed over there to see what we could find to eat.

Weather is supposed to turn around in the next couple days. The forecast predicts much colder temperatures with strong northerly winds bringing a bountiful supply of sea grass! Can't wait!

2020: End of February Happenings in Marathon

22 February 2020
Sunset Celebration at Banana Bay

The 11th Annual "Loopers" Sunset Celebration was held at Banana Bay Marina. Regardless of the windy conditions, given the crowd, it appeared to be a more popular event this year than last. Of all the people attending, Clark and I only recognized a handful of people. "La Cigale", "Leap of Faith" and "Daybreak" attended as well as Rene from "Zoey's Adventure".

On Sunday, Clark disappeared for a majority of the day to work with Jeff on "Mystic Gem" to address some battery-related issues. While he was away, I pulled out my sewing machine and made a holder for all of the various remotes we have related to the television.

Then I pulled out my paints and played at some artwork.

At 4:30, we had a date to walk to Marathon Marina to visit our friend Don and the crew on "Mariah".

Marathon Marina has a reputation of having great sunset views. These are the ones Clark took while visiting there ...

Sadly, as the day progressed, I realized that I was sinking fast. Clark hasd been coughing and sneezing for the past week, and it finally hit me. I spent the next two days blowing my nose and sleeping. We missed several planned activities as a result.

24 February 2020

On Monday I planned to attend the sea-glass art party hosted by Yasmine of "Yasmine Ann". Afterwards, we were scheduled to go out to dinner with Mike and Cheryl from "Amor ..." We had to cancel on both! I sent Clark out to take pictures of some of the art to see what folks created at class.

Since I was out of commission, Clark wandered around to see what was happening on the other side of the marina and found a bunch of folks cracking coconuts and drinking coconut milk.

Once again, on Tuesday, I spent the day lounging and sleeping. At 4:00, Faith had a "Mexican Train Dominoes" party planned up at the restaurant. Later, we planned to meet "Daybreak" at
the Marathon Steak and Lobster House. I had to beg off on all of it!

Clark was out and about and captured a picture of Bobby Hall at the top of his mast on "Nauti Girl".

Later, Bobby posted a picture on FaceBook that he had taken from the top of the mast looking across the marina.

26 February 2020

Every year, the end of February sees some boats leaving the marina. Today, we had two boats leave that we waved goodbye to. The predicted wind drove them away a little early to get a better weather window than if they left at the end of the month.

After watching our friends leave, Clark and I walked back to our boat and prepped to take her out for a maintenance run. We had a lovely, hour-long ride before the northerly winds kicked up and brought a chill to the air and turbulence to the water.

Because we greatly appreciate all that the staff at the marina do for us, Ann organizes a Staff Appreciation Pot Luck dinner at the end of February every year to acknowledge their efforts on our behalf. At tonight's event, we learned that Devon will be leaving the staff in just a couple of weeks. She will be missed!

After our pot luck dinner, Eric came to our boat and brought his guitar. The guitar is new to him, and Clark is showing him some technique and teaching him some theory. I snuck away with my current novel to let them practice without me watching them.

28 February 2020

Sandy, "L'Attitude Adjustment", and I went out for a girls' day of shopping and lunch. We left at 10:00 and did not return to the marina until almost 3:30. Sandy drove, and along the way to lunch, she stopped at a variety of places where we could browse art displays, gift shops, and food markets.

Sandy gave me a choice of places to eat; Mangrove Mama's sounding intriguing, so we stopped there for lunch.

Unfortunately, Clark did not have as fun a day as I did as he stayed on the boat and worked on taxes. He was as grumpy as a bear with a sore head when I got back. Tax time is never any fun.

29 February 2020 -- Leap Year!!

We had a very busy day today. Thankfully, even though I still had some congestion issues, I finally felt like myself and could fully enjoy the day. To start the day I jumped into Sandy's car with AC, "Hour Plan", for a very quick trip to the local farmer's market. I got lucky today as they had "ugly fruit" available. I bought that once before for Clark, and he enjoyed it. They finally had it again, so I grabbed a couple for him.

Shortly after we got back, I grabbed my stuff to go out with Beverly and Dave, "Amelie", for a trip to the Big Pine Flea Market. Clark said he was there once in the past, but I had never been there and had heard about it for years.

They even had landscaping supplies!

After touring the stalls at the big flea market (we picked up a couple of small items), Dave drove us to Boondock's to check out the smaller market available there. I resisted buying too much today, but I found gourmet cookies here that I just had to buy! Sinful indeed!

(we did not play -- just admired the "waterfall")

After we left Boondock's, Dave drove us to the Square Grouper for lunch. They serve delicious fish there! I had a very difficult time deciding between grouper and snapper! I decided on snapper -- the waitresses favorite!

When we got back to the boat mid-afternoon, Clark took off to go work with Dan on his boat to investigate some electrical-type problem. I decided to take advantage of the empty washers up at the laundry room. Afterwards I worked on some puzzles - Sudoku and such to pass the time.

At 7:00, Clark had been gone for over 4 hours, and I had still no idea when to expect him. Starving, I dug out some food and made myself a sandwich for dinner. He finally showed up around 8:00 or so. Fortunately, I had a leftover casserole to heat up for his dinner. Afterwards, we watched the movie "Blindside" while I updated the Blog!
