2021: Ortega sightings, Chores, and Trip home

 9 November 2021
No travel.

Tuesday the 9th was a lazy day as we anticipated a trip home to take care of prepping our house for winter. We did get to see some "interesting" sights.  First we watched a a rowboat pulling a 40-something foot yacht on the river. The boats stopped for the "captains" of each to consult for a considerably long time before the rowboat finally tugged the much larger boat over to a dock at the marina.

Our next excitement for the day was watching a freight train travel over the railroad bridge. I knew when I saw the train that Clark would count the cars, so I did not bother. Sure enough he made a full report after the last car passed - 115 cars and 3 engines! This was the highlight of the day!

Then we saw one more sight to break up the day - a man on a motorized SUP.

On Wednesday we borrowed the marina's courtesy car to drive to the car rental place to pick up a car for our drive home. The car they wanted to give us, as it was the only one on the lot, had a dent in the passenger side door and a cracked outside rearview mirror. This plus several warnings about car maintenance convinced us to wait until the afternoon and get a car in better condition.

I could not believe they expected us to take this car and at the full rental price to boot! After talking with the manager about the condition of the car, he agreed to deliver an alternate to us at the marina later in the day. He said he would give us a free upgrade to an SUV.

They texted later in the day to let us know they were on their way with the car. Clark walked up to the front of the marina to flag them down when they arrived. It took a while for the car to arrive. While he waited, Clark watched a butterfly flitting around some flowers.

The butterfly kept him entertained until they arrived with the car.

After we got the car, we packed anything we could in the trunk ready to leave bright and early in the morning for our drive home.

After a long drive, we spent several productive days at home. Unfortunately, the trees had not quite shed their leaves when we got there. We removed the leaves from the gutters as best we could. By "we" I mean Clark up on the ladder clearing out the leaves, and me down below holding the ladder having leaves dropped on my head.

Besides the leaf removal exercises, Clark setup the ice-eater system to protect the dock from ice buildup. I did some yard work picking up downed tree branches from recent wind and cleaning up a flower bed full of spent ferns.

We got our booster shots for Covid-19 and had doctor's visits for bloodwork, etc.

Although the trip was mostly chore related, we did take one day to drive to Connecticut to visit grandkids and their parents. We met at a park we have come to know from prior visits. It was so heart-warming to see the 3 and 5-year old race towards our car yelling and screaming in excitement to greet us as we pulled into the parking lot.

With an idea in mind of what the grandkids might like for Christmas, I spent many hours on Amazon getting a head start on shopping.

Since we arrived back at the boat close to midnight last night, we only unpacked the perishable goods and left the rest for today. After taking inventory of the boat's supplies, we headed off to Publix to augment our food supplies in preparation for departure from Jacksonville as we continue on towards Marathon in the Keys.

We drove to Green Cove Springs to pick up our forwarded mail then turned in the rental car. Since we are leaving Jacksonville early tomorrow, I ran the vacuum through the boat and did a couple of loads of laundry. Although the list of things to be done seemed rather insignificant, it took the majority of the day to take care of the list.
