We arrived in Charleston, South Carolina just before 3:00 p.m. after a long day of boating.

Arriving in Charleston, S.C. |
We contacted Jeff and Chris and found out that they had taken a boat tour to see Fort Sumter and would not be back to their rented house until sometime after 6:00. We decided to take advantage of the break, relax and do some boat cleanup.
Eventually we got the word that they were headed back to the house after stopping for some food supplies along the way. We had a delicious, homemade family dinner that Chris and Heather put together consisting of seafood boil, linguine, and asparagus.

After dinner Jeff drove us back to the boat so we did not have to find our way through unfamiliar streets in the dark.
Day 320
May 26, 2016
No Boat Travel
As planned we visited a plantation today. Clark and I walked over to the rented house where the "kids" were staying, so we could all leave from there to go to the Magnolia Plantation. When we registered, i.e. paid, we found ourselves scheduled for the 12:00 house tour and the 1:00 slave quarters tour. Even though it felt like we had just had breakfast, we decided we better grab a bite to eat at the Peacock Cafe before we did anything else. That decision turned out to be a good one as we barely had time for a quick "pit stop" between the two tours.

Plantation House (2nd view) |
We were not allowed to take any pictures within the house as theft of some of their prize possessions in the past has been traced back to pictures taken during house tours and posted on the internet.
After exiting the house tour, we walked down the road to catch the tram to see the four buildings remaining of the houses built for slaves. Most of the houses fell apart over the years but effort was made to preserve four of them to show how slaves lived on the plantation and in later years how one family lived in the 1960's.

Look who we found on our walk! Yikes! Devon was nearly on top of him before she saw him.
|
Although we enjoyed the gardens, we unfortunately were too late to see the azalea in full bloom and too early for some of the other plants.

After all the walking around in the heat, we needed refreshing drinks at the Peacock Cafe. While there we got to see a couple of colorful peacocks.

After our snack, we headed back to the car to drive to the final tour of the day - the swamp! Given all the walking I had done already, I was a bit dismayed to find that the tour of the swamp was a self-guided walking tour.

After our swamp tour which fortunately turned out to be not too buggy to enjoy, we headed to the Fish House restaurant for dinner. From the restaurant we enjoyed a view of the USS Yorktown
