Georgia: St. Simons Island

Day 307
NM Today; 41
NM To Date: 4896

We departed early for a rather long trip to St. Simons Island. Clark had to watch the depth carefully for the full length of the trip. The buoys shown below were high and dry due to the low tide. This area sees a seven-foot tide change.

We noticed that the scenery is becoming more industrial as we move northward.  We were told by local boaters, i.e. those native to the Georgia / Carolina areas, that we could purchase less expensive fuel at the Ocean Petroleum dock. We called ahead as recommended and were told that they were open and had fuel, so we stopped by to fill up. This is the second time we have stopped at a dock used by industrial fishermen and looking nothing like a fuel dock. The last time was at Spanish Wells in the Bahamas. The fill took us a bit out of our way but did save dollars making it worth our while.

At the end of our almost six-hour run today, we came to first Jekyll Island and then St. Simons Island -- two places we have been told by "locals" that we should definite see in Georgia.

We plan to keep the boat at St.Simons for the next week as we get together with our son, Chris, his wife, Heather, and their three-month old daughter, Lillian. I'm counting the minutes until we see them! Just three more days!
