2018: Vero Beach to Fort Pierce FL

11/16/2018
Depart: Vero Beach private dock 9:15
Arrive: Fort Pierce City Marina 11:10
Distance: 14 NM

As we sat around the house last night, our last night in Vero Beach, Franklin came up with the idea of he and Cathy cruising with us to Fort Pierce so they could see the area from the water. Don agreed to drive to Fort Pierce to collect them and bring them back to Vero Beach, and voila, we had a plan for this morning's travel.

Before we left Don's place, we all stood around and admired the now almost-pristine pool. We pulled in our lines and got moving just after 9:00. As we traveled through the Vero Beach area, Franklin and Cathy identified places where they had seen homes for sale.

One place Franklin identified for us was the restaurant where we ate the night Don returned from his Great Loop trip - Riverside Cafe. I told Clark to quick, grab a picture for the blog.

Further along our route, we saw what looked to be a house beached on an island in the waterway. What? Did a house float here? As all we could see as we approached was the end of the object, we thought for sure we were looking at a beached house. As we passed it, however, we could tell it was actually a beached houseboat.

House or houseboat beached on island??

Although it seemed to me that we just put fuel in the boat, I realized that that was two states ago in South Carolina, and it was time to take on fuel. Clark called various places before we left Vero Beach and found the best price, fortunately, could be found at our destination marina in Fort Pierce. As we approached the marina, Clark talked to the dock master and discovered that they could fuel our boat from our slip for the night.

We headed straight to our assigned slip, and after securing our lines for the night, we filled the tanks.
Fortunately, the pump was reasonably fast, and we finished fueling in a relatively short amount of time. At 11:50 when Don came strolling down the dock to collect Cathy and Franklin. Since we had completed all our docking chores, we could sit and chat for a few minutes before they all left to drive back to Vero Beach.

When we had our group dinner at Riverside Cafe in Vero Beach, Dana and Dennis on "Pharm Life" stopped by at our table to say hello. At that time, I discovered they would be in Fort Pierce tonight, so after things settled down this afternoon, I strolled over to find their boat and say hello. They were out, so I sent a text message saying we had arrived. As a result, they later stopped by our boat, and we made plans to eat dinner together at one of the nearby restaurants.

Around 5:00, Bob from Krogen Express, stopped by to discuss some boat issues with Clark. As soon as he left, we headed out to meet Dana and Dennis for dinner. We chose to eat dinner at the Original Tiki Bar right at the marina.

The restaurant had well-played, but loud, music. It made talking a bit of a challenge. After "screaming" to each other during dinner, we walked back to our boat to sit quietly and chat before saying goodnight. We talked about many subjects, but one in particular I found interesting was a discussion on Highwayman Art at the A E. Backus Museum. I need to add a visit to this museum to my "must see" list. (The Highwaymen were a group of 26 African American self-taught artists that sold their art along the roadside since they could not offer them for sale in galleries in the 1950s. They painted landscapes mostly in the Fort Pierce, Florida area.)

After Dana and Dennis left the boat, Clark and I walked back up to the marina office area to use the head one last time for the night. Nearby, the light shining into the water from the docks revealed abundant carp swimming in the area. People buy fish food and throw it into the water here, so the fish hang around looking for dinner. Surprisingly, given the time of day and lighting conditions, Clark captured a pretty good picture of a sampling of the fish.
