2018: Camp Lejeune to Bald Head Island, NC

10/30/2018
Depart: Camp Lejeune Anchorage 7:30
Arrive: Bald Head Island Marina 4:00
Distance: 59 nm

Having risen before the sun yet again today, Clark took some early morning pictures at the anchorage before we departed.

The theme for today ... "hurry up and wait". As we departed the anchorage, Clark said we had 1.5 hours to make the first bridge that only opened on the hour. The next bridge after that opened on the hour and half hour. We ended up waiting at the first bridge for 45 minutes drifting towards the bridge, backing off, and drifting back again. We missed the opening by just a couple of miles and a few minutes.

Clark managed to make it through the second bridge but only because he sped up and the bridge tender held the bridge for him. That felt like a real gift until Clark realized that he had forgotten about the next bridge which, once again, only opens on the hour. Having raced for the second bridge, we found ourselves once again drifting and position keeping for 45 minutes while waiting for the next bridge to open. What a waste of time and fuel!

We saw some more storm damage on today's trip. Besides more damaged and lopsided docks, we saw some damaged boats - always a sad sight.

The weather temperature is improving. I had no need for a blanket as we traveled today. We arrived at Bald Head Island marina around 4:00 and decided to bike to the food market on the island. I decided that a light wind breaker would be sufficient outer attire - a definite improvement over recent layering needs!

Clark thought we might find some of the provisions I could not get at our last stop. I thought that was very doubtful but decided the exercise would be fun. Clark was right and I was wrong. For a market on an island, I was surprised to see what they had in stock. I filled the backpack full of goodies.

The distance to the market is just under 2 miles each way from the marina. A popular mode of transportation on the island is by golf cart.
